Dr. Atilla Ertan has over 30 years of research and patient care experience in the field of gastroenterology, pancreas and liver disorders. After graduating from the University of Ankara School of Medicine (Ankara, Turkey) in 1963, Dr. Ertan went on to complete both his internship and residency programs in the area of internal medicine at the same institution. Dr. Ertan has completed two fellowship programs: one at the University of Ankara School of Medicine and the other at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Dr. Ertan specialized in gastroenterology-hepatology during both of this fellowships, and he is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology. He has worked as an academic gastroenterologist for 30 years in various established academic centers such as Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Tulane University of Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine. He was Chief of Gastroenterology Section (1985-1990) and Interim Chairman of Medicine (1989-1990) at Tulane University of Medical School and Chief of Gastroenterology Section (1990-2000) at The Methodist Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Ertan currently holds the positions of Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Digestive Disease Department at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.
